Patio
de los Naranjos
Seville, Spain - Sevilla, España
The Patio de los
Naranjos (Courtyard of Orange Trees) is all that remains of the
erstwhile Ben Basso main mosque, built in the twelfth century by
the Almohads as an anteroom where the Sevillian Muslims
performed their obligatory ablutions before entering the mosque.
A fountain is
preserved in the center that is thought to have been either to a
Visigoth baptismal font or, more recently, a bath of one of the
Roman thermae.

If you enter through
the Puerta de los Palos, the closest to the Giralda, which opens
onto the Plaza Virgen de los Reyes, curiously enough you see
hanging from the ceiling a wooden crocodile, commonly known as
“el lagarto” (“the lizard”), and an elephant’s tusk, apparently
gifts to Alfonso X from an Egyptian Sultan who sought the hand
of one of his daughters. |
