Convento de la Encarnación
Seville, Spain - Sevilla
España
The Convento de la
Encarnación, the Augustine Convent of the Incarnation, is
located in the Plaza Virgen de los Reyes, portico to Barrio
Santa Cruz. It is known more commonly
as the Convento de Santa Marta, since it was built on the lands
of the old Hospital de Santa Marta, founded by Fernán Martínez
in 1385 and ceded by Bishop Cienfuegos to that Community.
The old hospital’s
church has been conserved in very good condition, built in the
Mudéjar style in the fourteenth century, where Santa Marta,
Patron Saint of Hospitality, is venerated.

The secluded Plaza de
Santa Marta also remains from the old building, located behind
the convent and with an entrance at the beginning of
Calle
Mateos Gago. A little-known place even to many Sevillians, it
is one of the most enchanting spots in Seville.
The most interesting
part of the convent is the tower, which might have been part of
the Almohad defense system, as the decoration of its openings
indicates, dating from the mid-twelfth century.
The
nuns of the cloister, to help defray the Community’s expenses,
sell unconsecrated cuttings of the hosts, also known as
obleas, or wafers. |
