El Giraldillo
Seville, Spain - Sevilla

El Giradillo is the
name given the massive sculpture that tops the Giralda bell
tower, and the fact that it acts as a weathervane, turning
according to the direction of the wind, gave the tower its name,
Giralda,
from “girar”, “to turn”.
This massive sculpture
is four meters tall, not counting the base on which it turns,
and it represents Faith, the triumph of Christianity.

It was cast in bronze
between 1566 and 1568 by Bartolomé Morel, who used a model,
probably by Juan Bautista Vázquez the Elder, following a drawing
by the painter Luis de Vargas.
Recently restored, a
replica in polyester made in 1981 can be seen on display inside
the Cathedral, fascinating in its scale and attractive forms.
Tambien en la puerta del cercano
Restaurante El Giraldillo se puede contemplar una excelente
escultura de El Giraldillo , que sirve como rotulo del
establecimiento, obra del prestigioso escultor sevillano D.
