Archbishop’s Palace
Seville, Spain
Palacio Arzobispal
Sevilla, España
The
Palacio
Arzobispal, or Archbishop’s Palace, is located in the
Plaza
Virgen de los Reyes, portico of the Barrio Santa Cruz, and
is the residence of the Archbishop of Seville.
The current
Archbishop’s Palace was built on top of the old Palacio de Don
Remondo, the first bishop of Seville after the reconquest of the
city by Saint King Fernando III in 1248.
Its palatial façade,
the color of sand and bull’s blood, is enhanced by its splendid
doorway, one of the best examples of Sevillian Baroque.

Inside, take in the
majestic central staircase, built of colored marble and
decorated by paintings attributed to Juan de Espinal, and the
sixteenth-century fountain in the second courtyard.
The Main Hall is also
breathtaking, its ceiling decorated with seventy canvasses in
exaltation of the Catholic Church, one part of the remarkable
collection of Sevillian baroque paintings and sculptures
scattered around the palace, with works by Francisco de Herrera
“the elder”, Francisco Pacheco, Zurburán, and Murillo, among
others.
As a side note, there
is a replica of this Archbishop’s Palace in Umbrete, a village
near Seville, which used to be the summer residence of the
archbishops. |
